On this date last year, Truveta was officially founded by four innovative health providers, Providence, Advocate Aurora Health, Tenet Health, and Trinity Health. September 22 will always be a special day for us.
As I think back, I’m reminded that Truveta was born of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the pandemic began ravaging our country and our world, families struggled to safely protect each other with well-intended, but conflicting guidance. Physicians struggled to learn how to treat this virus as hundreds of thousands died. Life science companies struggled to staff clinical trials with enough diverse participants to effectively test and garner approval of life-saving vaccines. The world needed faster answers, clearer guidance, and the opportunity to learn from each other. It became clear – the world needed Truveta.
Over months of working together virtually, we filed articles of incorporation and made the company official on September 22, 2020. It was my honor to serve as CEO of the second start-up in my technology career.
Time flew this last year as the company grew from just a few Truvetans to 100+ employees strong. Building a company is no small task in any year or season, but throw in a global pandemic, worldwide uncertainty and most people working or schooling from home, it’s an understatement to say this time is much different than the first company I built 25 years ago.
Over the last year, I have learned culture matters more than anything and when you get it right, a shared vision like ours – Saving Lives with Data – can inspire a group of people to innovate faster than ever thought possible.
Along the way, we’ve had a ton of fun.
We played frisbee golf to celebrate our founding, then shared our crazy Halloween costumes and held virtual dance-offs online that fall.
By February 2021, we shared 14 health systems had joined together to introduce Truveta to the world. Each month we increased our ranks with new Truvetans representing the best of the best from technology and healthcare. And by April we picked up a team mascot – the Canadian goose who held watch outside our building protecting a nest near our front door. In July, we welcomed our first intern class and three new health provider members, introduced our new brand identity and updated our values, bringing new energy to the team and color to our presentations.
Meanwhile, the serious work of our mission to find cures faster, empower every clinician to be an expert and help families make the most informed decisions about their care is ever present. We’ve accelerated our work faster than even I imagined possible.
I am grateful to our health provider members who have made Truveta possible and the customers and partners who are providing us with such valuable feedback as we build our solutions. We believe we are on the cusp of something really special for the world – and as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to cause so much damage, we are led with a sense of urgency to help.
Soon I’ll be sharing more about our progress. Until then, please join me in celebrating our first birthday and the incredible group of Truvetans and health provider members making this journey so worthwhile.
